Dr. Armin Rembe Lecture Series at La Quinta

Dr. Armin Rembe Lecture Series at La Quinta is a monthly event in honor of Dr. Rembe, who passed away in 2021. The series is inspired by his love of Los Poblanos, his curiosity, intelligence and community relationships. This series celebrates his legacy by promoting stimulating conversations rooted in the core values and mission of Los Poblanos. The series also reflects the rich history of La Quinta Cultural Center in the 1930s and 1940s, when the Simms family held events to promote the arts. As we work to preserve La Quinta as an important architectural landmark, we aim to emulate its dynamic programming through our own curated events and experiences. Experience a culturally rich day at La Quinta by joining us for afternoon tea before the evening lecture.

Guests are invited to visit the Library Bar at La Quinta between 4:30 and 5:30 PM before the talk begins at 5:30 PM.

$20 per person
The lectures are limited to 50 guests.

MAY 21ST: Photographing New Mexico’s Historic Churches

Join us for a talk from local photographer and author, David Policansky, about his long-term mission to photograph the captivating and evocative historic Catholic churches across the state of New Mexico. The mission became a journey that covered the highways, back roads, and trails of the state, from north to south, east to west. He has driven these roads, photographing these churches that reflect New Mexico's complex history and beautiful landscapes, and talked to many people who attend, maintain, and love them. Photographing New Mexico churches has deepened his appreciation of New Mexico's marvelous cultural and natural landscapes. During this presentation, David will share stories and images of his travels across the state to visit and help celebrate these important historical sites.

Speaker: David Policansky was born in Cape Town, South Africa and came to the United States for his higher education. He received a bachelor's degree in biology from Stanford University and masters and PhD degrees in biology from the University of Oregon. He taught biology at the University of Massachusetts in Boston and did research, and has published more than 35 scientific papers. After living in Washington for many years, he and his wife spent more and more time in New Mexico, where they now live, attracted by its spectacular landscapes and diverse and fascinating history and cultures. David has been interested in churches, especially Catholic churches, for many decades. He began photographing New Mexico's historic adobe, stone, and brick churches in 2005 and has continued to do so, with increasing urgency as it becomes clearer that these churches do not last forever. David has published three volumes of photo books featuring some of the 400+ historic Catholic churches in New Mexico.
