Up against incredible design projects ranging from Bali to Shanghai, Los Poblanos brought attention to New Mexico by winning Hospitality Design Magazine’s prestigious Midsize Hotel design award at the 15th annual HD Awards Ceremony held in New York City on June 5, shining light on innovation happening in our state. The recent renovation and expansion project at Los Poblanos was selected from over one thousand international entries by an accomplished panel of hospitality experts and industry leaders that said of Los Poblanos “the environment and the mood tell a beautiful story.”
In partnership with Atkin Olshin Schade Architects and other outstanding New Mexican businesses, the recent remodel and expansion project was completed in 2017. AOS principal Shawn Evans says “The project demonstrates that distinguished old inns need not choose between historical correctness and modern amenities. These cherished places can be given room to evolve and grow without compromising their integrity.” Maintaining the same elegance as the existing structures, the expansion is anchored in its restrained, rustic aesthetic, welcoming agritourism guests from all over the world, as well as neighbors wandering in from right down the street. Executive Director Matthew Rembe says the primary focus of the project was about “being respectful of the past while introducing new ideas and innovation.”
In an effort to promote the stories of New Mexico and encourage tourism, the 28 new guest rooms and suites are the centerpiece of the expansion, designed to recall the 1930’s dairy-style buildings that once dotted the area. The historic structures were originally put in place to house the working dairy and experimental farm that was onsite in the 1930’s, and have been maintained and restored into use for an expanded field-to-fork restaurant and bar, 2,800-square-foot commercial-grade kitchen and bakery, enlarged retail shop and lavender production facility.
